Wood species drives everything else about a cabinet: how it grains, how it ages, and how it responds to Calgary's dry indoor winters.
Species selection is one of the first and most consequential decisions on any wood cabinet project. Oak shows a pronounced open grain that reads traditional or modern depending on the cut; walnut brings a darker tone that lightens slightly over years of light exposure; maple and birch give a tighter, more uniform grain that takes paint especially well.
Whatever species is chosen, we account for Calgary's dry winter indoor humidity in how we mill and finish it, since wood that's improperly dried before fabrication is far more likely to check or warp once the furnace runs for months at a stretch.
Maple and birch tend to be the most dimensionally stable in low-humidity conditions, though any species will perform well if it's properly kiln-dried before fabrication.
Solid wood generally costs more than veneered construction, though veneer over quality plywood is often the more dimensionally stable choice for large flat panels like doors.
